Christa with her dad, Edward, and sisters, Betsy and Lisa,
at her Confirmation at St. Jeremiah's in 1961
Christa McAuliffe was a member of St. Jeremiah's Parish from its inception, received her confirmation, and was married in the church. During this time, she not only worshipped here and attended religious education programs, but she was also involved in many parish activities, especially the Girl Scout program. She is well remembered as the star pitcher of the St. Jeremiah Girls Softball Team. The last visit she made to St. Jeremiah's was to be Godmother at the the baptism of one of her nieces right before she entered the training program for the Challenger mission.
Parishioners and people from all over the world donated funds for the purchase of carillon bells in the church that would ring out gracing the neighborhood that she once graced with her presence, calling people to worship and pealing hymns of praise each day. The ringing of bells would be a reminder to all who hear their peal of the beauty of a young, generous, vibrant lady whose beautiful life sang a song by reaching out.
